Uvalde CISD Moving Forward Foundation receives $10+ million donation for new school in Uvalde

A $10 million dollar donation toward the completion of the new elementary school in Uvalde CISD, given by the Kate Marmion Charitable Foundation to the Uvalde CISD Moving Forward Foundation, was announced at a press conference on Aug. 27 at the construction site of the new school. Construction of the school is set to be completed in Fall 2025.

The Kate Marmion Charitable Foundation also issued $5 million matching grant to the Uvalde CISD Moving Forward Foundation. Every donation made to the “Hope Blooms in Uvalde” campaign will be matched dollar for dollar.

“The Kate Marmion Charitable Foundation is humbled to be able to help Uvalde with this donation,” said Dolph Briscoe IV, President of the Kate Marmion Charitable Foundation. “My cousin, Kate Marmion, was a graduate of Uvalde CISD, as were the founders of our foundation, her mother (and my aunt), the late Janey Briscoe Marmion, and our grandfather, the late former Texas Governor Dolph Briscoe, Jr. With three generations of the Briscoe family having attended Uvalde schools, and in keeping with the foundation’s mission to to encourage, support, and promote people, places, and programs in Uvalde and South Texas that were important to Kate, our foundation board could think of no gift more appropriate than to assist with the building of this new school.  The Kate Marmion Charitable Foundation is committed to honoring the victims and survivors of the tragedy that occurred two years ago, and our board hopes the new school will continue a process of support, remembrance, and healing for the community.”

The Uvalde CISD Moving Forward Foundation has now raised 83 percent of the funds needed to fully fund the completion of the school. Raising the $5 million dollars and receiving the $5 million matching grant will complete the Foundation’s fundraising. Donations can be made by visiting www.UvaldeCISDMovingForward.org

“This donation from the Kate Marmion Charitable Foundation comes at the right time as we approached our deadline to fully fund the construction of the new elementary school,” said Tim Miller, Executive Director of the Uvalde CISD Moving Forward Foundation. “We now are looking to everyone to join us in bringing hope and healing today, and for future Uvalde Coyotes, by donating to the ‘Hope Blooms in Uvalde’ campaign.”

The Uvalde CISD Moving Forward Foundation was created in the wake of the tragedy at Robb Elementary School through gifts from grocery chain, H-E-B, and the Butt family totaling $10 million. Huckabee Inc. donated their architectural services, becoming a founding partner. Beginning in the fall of 2022, the Foundation began working with the Uvalde CISD Community Advisory Committee to develop the plans for the new elementary school. Those plans were approved by the Uvalde CISD Board of Trustees in April 2023 and construction broke ground in February 2024.

Final renderings of new elementary school shared with community during meeting

The Uvalde CISD Moving Forward Foundation and Uvalde CISD Community Advisory Committee hosted their last community meeting on Tuesday, April 11.

The meeting provided an update on the progress of the new elementary school for the Uvalde community including a final preview of the schematics for the new elementary school. This meeting was the final step in the process of developing the full schematic for the new elementary school.

An animated video that simulates a drone flying above and through the new elementary school was also previewed during the meeting.

The Uvalde CISD Community Advisory Committee and Huckabee Architects will present the schematic to the Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District Board for approval during its meeting on Monday, April 17.

“We are proud of the work and partnership that has occurred between the Moving Forward Foundation, Huckabee Architects, and, most importantly, the Uvalde community to come to this point,” said Tim Miller, Executive Director of the Uvalde CISD Moving Forward Foundation. “The plans for the new school are a reflection of the intentional dialogue happening with the Uvalde community as we move toward the construction phase of our work.”

A rendering of a tree is included in the proposed schematic design as a tribute to the lives lost on May 24, 2022. The tree includes two large branches, representing the two teachers who lost their lives, and 19 smaller branches representing the children who were victims.

Huckabee Architects and the Uvalde CISD Moving Forward Foundation began the process of creating the schematics last September with the Uvalde CISD Community Advisory Committee, which was appointed by the Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District. The process has also included design charette meetings with students, campus staff, district leaders, law enforcement, and emergency responders. The Uvalde CISD Moving Forward Foundation and the Uvalde CISD Community Advisory Committee have hosted three previous meetings for the Uvalde community at-large to stay updated on the progress.

“It has been our most important goal to ensure that the plans for the new school are informed by the Uvalde community and that our process remains transparent as much as possible for the community,” said Miller.

Work for the Uvalde CISD Moving Forward Foundation now moves closer to the construction phase which is slated to begin during the second half of 2023. The Uvalde CISD Moving Forward Foundation is also continuing  a campaign to raise additional funds from individual donors to help close the gap in funding secured to complete the new elementary school. Those interested in donating to the Uvalde CISD Moving Forward Foundation can visit www.uvaldecisdmovingforward.org for more information on how to donate.
